SUGGESTIONS OF THINGS TO DO AND SEE IN THE MOOSEHEAD LAKE REGION

 

AREA ACTIVITIES

 

CANOEING / KAYAKING - The Moosehead Lake Region offers unsurpassed canoeing / kayaking adventures.  Try it alone or go with one of the areas trip outfitters/guides/lessons, such as Northwoods Outfitters or Allagash Canoe Trips.  Rent canoes or kayaks at many locations including Northwoods Outfitters 207-695-3288 and Indian Hill Trading Post 207-695-2104

 

WHITEWATER RAFTING - Experience the thrills of a lifetime on the Kennebec and Penobscot Rivers, as well as, other area rivers.  Go with one of the many excellent area companies such as Wilderness Expeditions 1-800-825-9453, what a ride you'll have.  Trips are available for all levels of expertise.  Daily water releases, thrilling rapids, and dramatic scenery all awaits you and your family.

 

SEAPLANE RIDES - Go for a wilderness adventure or scenic tour.  Take off from the lake, sit back and enjoy the ride.  You'll never see Moosehead better.  What a view! There’s many fine flight services but stop in at Curriers Flying Service 207-695-2778 and see Sue and Roger, they'll set you up with the trip perfect for you and your budget.  Fly in to remote lakes and ponds with Curriers or try Folsom's Air Service 207-695-2821.

 

FLY FISHING - World famous fly-fishing is offered to you.  Try the Roach River or the East Outlet of the Kennebec River for some great fly-fishing fun.  Stop in at Maine Guide Fly Shop and Guide Service 207-695-2266 and visit with Dan Legere and his crew.  They offer guided trips for young and old, experienced and beginners (not only fishing, but moose safaris and hiking trips too.) 

 

FISHING - The abundant lakes, rivers, ponds and streams in the region offer you a wide variety of fishing adventures, whether it be on your own or with one of the regions many excellent guides such as Maine Guide and Fly Shop 207-695-2266.  Typical of this region are the cold water species, Brook Trout, Landlocked Salmon and Lake Trout. In winter, ice fishing is available.

 

GOLFING - Two golf courses, Squaw Mt. Village Golf Course and Mt. Kineo Golf Course offer challenging and scenic courses with Mt. Kineo's on the shore of Kineo Island on Moosehead Lake. Cart and club rentals available.  Or try the Leisure Life Resort's Driving Range 207-695-3737.

 

MOOSE WATCHING - All around the Moosehead Region wildlife abounds, moose, deer, fox, bear, loon, birds (including eagles & falcons), and so much more.  Take a guided moose tour with one of our many guide outfits such as the popular trip on The Birches (800)825-9453, a guided pontoon boat ride on Moosehead Lake and don't forget to bring your camera.   You can tour by pontoon boat, foot, canoe, kayak, or car. 

 

CRUISES - The Katahdin 207-695-2716, or "Kate" as she's affectionately called by all, offers cruises on Moosehead Lake.  Cruise in comfort aboard this original log-hauling steamer.  Take the 3-hour Sugar Island cruise or the 6-hour cruise to Kineo Island and back.  Call the Moosehead Marine Museum, home of the Katahdin, and ask about their “Head of the Lake” trip.  A 10-hour cruise that travels the full 40-mile length of Moosehead Lake from Greenville to Toe of the Boot and back.  85% Of Moosehead Lake is undeveloped.  The only way to see the whole lake is by boat or air.

TENNIS - Two municipal outdoor courts located next to Greenville High School.  Bring your own rackets and tennis balls for an early morning match or enjoy a cool evening match under the lights.

 

MOUNTAIN BIKING - Enjoy the beautiful scenery but watch out for the Moose. Bring you own bike or rent one at Northwoods Outfitters 207-695-3288.  Don't forget your camera!

 

HIKING - You could be here all summer and never get to all the hiking trails.  Hike up Moose Mountain  (formerly called Big Squaw Mt.) to the oldest fire tower in the U.S.  Take the Ferry to Mt. Kineo and climb to the top and enjoy a magnificent view of Moosehead Lake.  See the sheer flint cliffs that overhang the lake.  Don't forget Spencer Mt., Elephant Mt., Moxie Falls, Boarstone Mt, Barren Mt., Gulf Hagas (the Grand Canyon of the East) just to name a few.   Hike up to the B-52 Bomber Memorial crash site and stop for a moment of silent prayer then continue up to Baker Pond on Elephant Mountain and enjoy the fly fishing or have a picnic.

 

HORSEBACK RIDING -  Call Rockies Golden Acres 207-695-3229 for a fun way of enjoying the Moosehead Lake Region.  Take a ride with Kim and her crew and see the Moosehead Lake Region from a different perspective.  All levels of rides from the beginner to the expert rider are offered.

 

SCENIC CHAIRLIFT RIDES - Ride to the top of Moose Mountain (formerly Big Squaw Mountain), over 3000 feet and view the splendor of the vast views of mountains and lakes.  Call Big Squaw Mountain Resort 207-695-1000 and check their chairlift schedule.

 

RESTAURANTS -  Restaurants abound in the Greenville, from fine dining at the Greenville Inn, to family style meals or quick burgers at Flatlanders Pub, Rod and Reel, The Trailside, Last Frontier, Auntie M's, and Ye Olde Village Deli to pizzas and subs at Jamieson's Market.  There's great dining on the lake at Kelly's Landing, the Black Frog, or the Boom Chain Restaurants.  Sit and watch the seaplanes take off and land or watch the Katahdin as she cruises the lake.  Pull up by car or by boat as they all offer parking and docking.  Don’t forget the Lost Lobster or Graves & Sons Seafood.  They offer great catches from the sea. 

 

SHOPPING -   There's many shops in the area for your enjoyment.  Try Indian Hill Trading Post for just about anything you can think of from clothing, to gift items, cards, shoes, sporting goods, electronics, etc.  The  Corner Shop, Moose n’ Around, Grizzly's Den, and many others offer great gift and novelty items.   There's even an antique store, Hamilton's Antiques.

 

Well, we could go on and on with all the church suppers, fairs, and special events offered throughout the region. The International Sea Plane Fly-In, Moose Mania, the Tour de Moose Mountain Bike Ride/Race, Rowing Regatta, Forest Heritage Days, July 4th Fireworks just to name a few, are special events held every year.  Come and enjoy The Moosehead Lake Region and Greenville.
